Gary Retelny is President and CEO of ISS STOXX whose roots date back to 1985 as Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS). Since 2011, he has held responsibility for overall leadership of the business which today includes more than 4,000 financial industry professionals operating across 34 global locations and spanning five discrete business lines: Index, Governance, Sustainability, Corporate, and Market Intelligence.
Gary directs client-driven innovation across all facets of the ISS STOXX business. He also leads initiatives to enhance and expand ISS STOXX’s industry leading benchmark and custom indices, research, ratings, and suite of analytical offerings through investment in staff around the globe and, separately, investment in technology to ensure that ISS STOXX platforms, infrastructure, and security protocols are the industry’s gold standard.
With more than 40 years of experience in senior roles at investment firms, Gary is also responsible for expanding ISS STOXX’s offerings through global acquisitions that are a strong cultural fit. Included among the nearly 20 transactions Gary has overseen are oekom research AG (2018), Strategic Insight (2019), and STOXX (2023).
Prior to leading ISS STOXX, Gary was Chief Administrative Officer and Head of Strategy and Business Development at MSCI Inc. where he led strategic initiatives including the IPO of MSCI on the NYSE in 2007, the acquisition of Barra in 2004, and the acquisition and financing of RiskMetrics Group in 2010.
A native of Nicaragua and fluent Spanish speaker, Gary holds a B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Stanford University as well as an M.B.A. from Stanford Business School.
